How does Injection Moulding Work?

How does Injection Moulding Work?
- Mould Design: You must create a metal mold in the shape of the desired plastic product. Usually, the mould is made of steel of aluminum. It has two halves which come together to form the finish product. The mould is hollow on the inside to allow melted plastic to flow into it. Moulds are specific to each product and needs to be created for each new product.
- Selecting and Preparing Plastic: This process begins with selecting the suitable plastic material which is in the form of plastic pellets. The pellets are fed into a hopper. The material enters an extrusion screw where it is compressed and heated to its melting points. Because different types of plastics have different melting points. Reaching the correct temperature range for a plastic’s melt point is important for a successful result.
- Injecting the Plastic into the Mould: Inject the molten plastic into the mold cavity under high pressure. While under this immense pressure, the mould holds the desired shape and design of the final product. The injection process fills the mould with molten plastic, shaping it precisely to the mould’s configuration.
- Cooling and Finishing: Lastly, Once the plastic has filled the mould, it undergoes cooling to solidify. Next it takes the shape of the mould. Though cooling times vary based on the material and product complexity. After solidification, the mold opens, and the finished product is ejected. Finally, it is then ready for further finishing processes if needed, such as trimming or assembly.
